Stand Up Paddle Surfing has experienced a recent surge in popularity. Why is this you may ask? It could be any of the following fresh perspectives and benefits that it can bring to your surfing:
• Provides an excellent workout, targeting your core muscle groups and providing an overall feeling of balanced strength.
• Allows you to enjoy the ocean (or lake/river) in less than optimal conditions when there are no waves or the water temperature is extremely cold.
• Improves balance, coordination and strength which will translate to improved traditional surfing skills.
• Stand Up Paddling is an extremely fun and addictive sport that can be enjoyed by any age group with or without any previous experience. Trust us! You’ll be hooked!

Poseidon Stand Up is currently offering the following boards by Jimmy Lewis which cover needs for both the novice and experienced paddler. (see the Store for additional specialty use models)
This board is a Champ! The “All Around” series features a rounded nose, single fin, squash tail design, that produces a board with extremely wide range both on flat water and in the surf. If you are looking for one standup board with the widest range of use, and also one that is very forgiving (and “forgiving” is good for any ability level, even advanced) then the All Around series is for you. In flatwater, this board is VERY stable and easy to paddle. In surf up to head high, the “AA” cuts a smooth line and can be ridden very aggressively thanks to its rounded edges and flawless curves. Perfectly suited for the first timer and seasoned rider alike, the All Around is sure to be a timeless standup classic. Available in three sizes : 11' x 30” x 4.4", 10'6 x 28.75” x 4.3", 9'10 x 27.25” x 4". All sizes in stock and available for asap shipment.
The Surf Series standups feature a narrower nose and tail shape, with a rounded pintail tri-fin design. This increased outline curve produces a looser board made specifically for riding in the waves. The clean edge release in the tail of the board combined with the 2+1 tri-fin result in a board capable of generating incredible speed down the line. Whether it's knee high peelers or double overhead super juice, the Surf series provide confident takeoffs, bottom turns and cutbacks for riders looking to increase their level in the waves. Available in four sizes to perfectly match every rider size and ability : 10'8 x 29” x 4.4", 10'4 x 28.5” x 4.25", 10' x 28” x 4", 9'8 x 27” x 4". All sizes in stock and available for asap shipment.

We recently have gotten our hands on a Sawyer's Banzai Ellipse Paddle. These are beautiful paddles that are both functional as well as relatively inexpensive. Read our full review of this paddle here .
Dog on board! Christian Shubin sharing a wave with one of his best friends.
What a great day! I took our two dogs Marcus and Maya to the beach today to let them run along side me as I paddled down the coast. I have had some success with our dogs accompanying me on my board but never with this much success. We had beautiful glassy conditions that always are welcome here on the central coast. I pulled Marcus onto my 11' Jimmy Lewis All Around and we headed out past the surf. Marcus has never been a big fan of swiming in the ocean but has always loved chasing the waves as they crash against the shore. We paddled half a mile down the coast as Maya followed us, keeping her eye on us, waiting for us to come in. We cam up on 2 kayakers who were entertained to see us paddling up to them. A decent set rolled in that gave me the idea to try catching a wave with Marcus... I set us up for the wave, Marcus holding on up towards the nose. As I paddled into the wave the nose of the board started to pearl underwater but I new if I committed it would pop up and sure enough we were crusing along on our first wave together. Marcus stood his ground like a champ thanks to my recent implementation of a full deck pad. The kayakers started goinfg crazy as we sliced accross the face of the wave, cutting back to straighten out for Marcus's leap final leap to the safety of shallow water...
Next up was Maya who was excited to see us back on her sandy ground. Maya has always loved the water... She is getting to be a bit of an old lady but she was happy to let me put her on the board and start to push her out for her turn on the water...Whoa.. Out of nowhere Marcus comes and jumps back on the board with Maya..He can't get enough! Knowing that it was not realistic to have 2 dogs and I on one board I pushed them out into the surf regardless. Uh Oh.. A set wave... I try to push them through but Marcus falls off as Maya stays steady. Marcus swims in as I stand up on the board and continue to paddle out with Maya. We catch another great wave, riding into shore where Maya jumps off to the safety of the beach. Then who do I see? Marcus right back in the mix, eager to get back on the board for another go. He's hooked!
After a few more waves with Marcus I was able to call my friend Mike to bring a camera down to document Marcus's new skills... Unfortunately we don't have photos of our glorious first wave but you can get a sense of his unique 4 legged style... Thanks Mike for the photos...
What is Stand Up Paddle Surfing?
(Excerpt from Wikipedia's definition)
"The popularity of the modern sport of SUP has its origination in the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. This is where the term "Beach Boy Surfing" originates, another name for Stand Up Paddle Surfing. In the early 2000s Hawaiian surfers such as Dave Kalama, Brian Keaulana, Archie Kalepa and Laird Hamilton started SUP as an alternative way to train while the surf was down. As the years went on they found themselves entering events such as the Moloka'i to O'ahu Paddleboard Race and M_kaha's Big Board Surfing Classic. Now you can find Stand Up Paddle Surfers in many of the Outrigger and Paddleboard races as participants within their own division.
One difference between the modern idea of surfing and SUP is that the latter does not need a wave. In SUP, one can paddle on the open ocean, in harbors, on lakes, rivers or any large body of water. One of the advantages of Stand Up Paddle Surfing is the angle of visibility. Because of the standing height over the water one can see both deeper into the water and further across the surface of the water, allowing better visualization of features others lower above the water may not be able to see, whether it is the marine life in the harbors, lakes and coves or the incoming swells of the ocean marching on the horizon."
